A couple of Clemson football starters have been arrested on drug charges today.

Senior running back Travis Zachery and junior left tackle Akil Smith were arrested late Tuesday night. Clemson officals say both have been suspended from school and kicked off the football team.

Tigers coach Tommy Bowden issued a statement that said dismissing the players was in the best interest of the team and university.

Smith is charged with three counts of sale of marijuana and sale of marijuana within proximity of a school. Zachery faces a charge of distribution of marijuana. Jail time could be next for both, it's the third time in two years a group of Tigers has had problems with the law.

This news comes just hours after Clemson accepted an invitation to play in the Humanitarian Bowl on New Years Eve. The Tigers will play Louisiana Tech in Boise, Idaho on the famous blue artificial turf.
